Privacy Policy
This policy explains what data StatePension.org collects when you visit, who it is shared with, what your rights are, and how to opt out of personalised advertising. The policy applies to the website at statepension.org and any of its subpages.
Who we are
StatePension.org is an independent information resource focused on the UK State Pension. We are not affiliated with HM Government, the Department for Work and Pensions, HMRC, or any government agency. References below to "we", "us", and "our" refer to the operators of StatePension.org.
Information we collect
We do not ask for your name, address, or other personal details to view the site, and we do not run user accounts. The data we do collect falls into three groups:
1. Information you give us
- Calculator inputs. When you use one of our calculators (date of birth, qualifying years, deferral weeks, voluntary NI inputs), the values stay in your browser. They are not transmitted to our servers, because the calculators run as static client-side scripts.
- Email correspondence. If you contact us by email, we will hold the contents of that message for as long as needed to respond and to keep a record of feedback.
2. Information collected automatically
- Server access logs. Our hosting provider records standard request information (IP address, user agent, referring URL, timestamp, requested URL, response code) for security and reliability. These logs are retained for a short rolling window and are not used to build user profiles.
- Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID
G-N3816L30G6) to understand which pages are useful and where readers come from. Google Analytics sets cookies and may process a truncated version of your IP address. The aggregated reports we see do not identify individual visitors.
3. Information collected by advertising partners
- Google AdSense. We display advertising provided by Google, including its third-party vendors. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. This is sometimes called personalised advertising. You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- Our publisher identity is recorded in our ads.txt file, which Google's network reads to verify that we have authorised it to sell our ad inventory.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use a small number of cookies and one local-storage entry. Full details, including category, source, and lifetime, are listed on the Cookie Policy page. In short:
- Strictly necessary. A consent flag in
localStorageremembers that you closed the cookie banner. A theme flag inlocalStorageremembers your light/dark mode preference. - Analytics. Google Analytics cookies (e.g.
_ga,_ga_*) measure aggregate visits. - Advertising. Google AdSense and its partners may set cookies such as
NID,IDE,__gads,__gpifor ad delivery, frequency capping, and measurement.
How we use the data
- To run the website and keep it secure.
- To measure which articles and tools readers find useful, in aggregate.
- To deliver advertising that supports the site's running costs.
- To respond to feedback you send us by email.
We do not sell personal data. We do not combine analytics data with email correspondence to build profiles.
Legal basis (UK GDPR)
- Consent for analytics and advertising cookies, captured through the cookie banner.
- Legitimate interests for security logging, fraud prevention, and the basic operation of the site.
- Performance of a request when you email us and expect a reply.
Sharing and recipients
We do not share personal data with anyone except:
- Our hosting provider, which serves the website to your browser.
- Google, as the operator of Google Analytics and Google AdSense, on the terms set out in their own policies.
- Where required by law, regulator, or court order.
International transfers
Google operates infrastructure outside the UK and EEA. Where data is transferred outside the UK, Google relies on its own safeguards, including the UK Extension to the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable. See Google's Privacy Policy for current details.
Retention
- Server logs: typically up to 30 days.
- Google Analytics: retained according to the property setting (currently 14 months for user-level data).
- AdSense data: retained by Google according to its own policies.
- Email feedback: kept while it is useful for responding and for content corrections, then deleted.
Your rights
If you are in the UK or EEA, the UK GDPR gives you the right to:
- Ask what personal data is held about you.
- Ask for a copy of that data.
- Ask for inaccurate data to be corrected.
- Ask for data to be deleted, subject to legal exceptions.
- Withdraw consent for analytics and advertising cookies at any time.
- Object to processing carried out under legitimate interests.
- Complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
If you are in California
The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and CPRA give California residents similar rights, including the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete it, and the right to opt out of "sharing" for cross-context behavioural advertising. To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the address below.
